They hadn’t said a word to one another until they sat down to eat lunch. Lawyer was more excited than a male stripper dancing next to Channing. The Channing. He grinned at the thought.

“You haven’t said anything,” Forrest said, looking around the chow hall. “You don’t believe it. Do you?”

Lawyer swallowed then, realizing he hadn’t quite processed what the warden had told them. “I believe he has the evidence to prove we’re innocent because we are innocent. He even said Steven wasn’t working that corner because he wanted to be there. Whoever came forward with testimony or proof must have some pretty strong evidence to clear us.”

“But?”

“But we’re still in here,” Lawyer pointed out, locking gazes with Big David. “And we still have another problem to handle.”

“You heard the warden.” Forrest tented his hands over his meal tray. “He’ll have me moved. I think he’ll take care of that. He seems like an honorable man.”

“How can a man be honorable when he tells you upfront he isn’t a good man, but he’s fair?”

“That made perfect sense to me. He’s a prison warden for crying out loud. He’s not here because he’s a kind person without a mean bone in his body. He has at least one or two.”

“Those are the two I’m worried about,” Lawyer said, opening his carton of milk.

“If you don’t stop glaring at Big David, we’ll never get out of here. You’ll be in a fight before we make it through freedom’s gates.”

“I’m not risking that,” Lawyer promised. “For either of us.”

“You mean it hasn’t crossed your mind that David could cause us enough trouble that we never get out of here?”

Lawyer had definitely thought of the possibility. If he’d been in prison alone, he would’ve opted for county. He valued his life. Instead, he and Forrest would need to take turns sleeping and try to stay on their toes for the next seventy-two hours.

“Big David wanted me to tell you he’ll work out a deal.” A young punk had approached them before Lawyer had even seen him coming.

So much for staying on their toes.

“What kind of deal?” Lawyer asked, quite confident he and Big David wouldn’t be able to come to any sort of understanding.

“He says you can trade yourself for him.” The kid nodded at Forrest.

“Done.”

“What?” Forrest nearly came out of his seat.

Lawyer glanced at Forrest and pushed his palm down in mid-air, indicating Forrest should keep his seat and remain calm.

“I’ll let him know,” the punk said, grinning at Forrest. “Don’t mean he won’t get a hold of you eventually. Just means he wants your man first.”

The messenger disappeared, and Lawyer quickly said, “Don’t show any emotion now.” He was aware of Big David’s crew watching them then. “He wants a reaction and you’re giving him what he wants. Start eating. Look away from him. Focus on me.”

Forrest dropped his head. “Are you out of your blasted mind?”

Lawyer felt a small victory regardless of his state of mind. Forrest would be working alongside David, and Lawyer would be shoveling shit in the barn.
